According to Japan’s meteorological agency, more than 155 earthquakes have struck the country just within the first two days of 2024. The relentless seismic activity began with a massive 7.5 magnitude quake that struck Ishikawa prefecture on the main island of Honshu at 4:10 PM local time on January 1.
Centered just 89 km north of Toyama city, the violent shaking was felt as far away as Tokyo. Within minutes, the earthquake generated tsunami waves over a meter high, which came crashing into coastal towns along Japan’s west coast.
7.5 Magnitude Tremor Triggers Tsunami Waves,
The 7.5 magnitude earthquake on January 1 is the most powerful quake to batter the region in over four decades. The tremors were strong enough to produce tsunami waves across coastal areas in Honshu.
Several fires also broke out in the aftermath, including a major blaze at an oil facility in Niigata port that quickly engulfed an area over 100 meters wide. Meanwhile, the tsunami waves wreaked havoc in towns like Wajima, with surges reaching at least 1.2 meters high.
Widespread Destruction Across Honshu Island,
The devastating earthquakes have left wide trails of damage and disruption across Honshu, Japan’s largest island. From rural coastal villages to densely populated Tokyo, Honshu has borne the brunt of the destruction.
At least 24 fatalities have been reported so far, and many more remain trapped under debris. Nearly 45,000 households are without electricity, while roads, rail lines and other key infrastructure have been
severely damaged. With aftershocks still continuing, thousands have evacuated homes for emergency shelters.
Economic Blow for Struggling Tourism Industry,
The earthquakes spell further misery for Japan’s economy and tourism industry which were still recovering from the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake. Inbound tourism had started rebounding after sharp declines after the 2011 disaster. But the latest earthquakes have again tarnished Japan’s image as a safe destination.
Early forecasts estimate the economic loss to be between 3.3% and 5.2% of Japan’s GDP. The tourism industry faces an uphill battle to regain tourist confidence.
