Season 1

When Phoebe had just moved out, Rachel, who had deserted her fiancé at the altar on their wedding day, arrived in New York and ended up sharing a room with Monica. Early in the season, it is shown that Ross has had a crush on Rachel ever since they were in high school together. His attempts to express his feelings to her are the focus of several episodes. At the end of the season, Ross departs for a fossil dig in China, skipping Rachel’s birthday celebration but staying long enough to give her a sentimental gift, a cameo that was identical to the one that belonged to Rachel’s grandmother.

Because the season is episodic, the other characters go on numerous dates, many of which end badly. Janice, a recurring character, is first introduced as a girlfriend who Chandler dumps in an early episode but frequently sees again throughout the course of the following ten seasons.
