Aunjanue Ellis, Serena Williams shine at Essence Black Women in Hollywood luncheon: ‘She’s killing it’

When a film that you are a part of is nominated for the best picture category at the Academy Awards, you keep mum when asked about your favourite contender. 

Layla Crawford jokingly said that they are not allowed to answer that question. For your knowledge, Layla Crawford plays the role of Williams’ sister Lyndrea Price in the movie “King Richard,” which is nominated for Oscars. It is the biopic of Richard Williams’ which showcases his efforts to make his daughters Serena and Venus Williams champions of tennis.

Crawford spoke to USA TODAY during the gold carpet before the Essence magazine’s Black Women in Hollywood awards. She expressed her feelings about being surrounded by women that she looked up to as a child actor. 

After the pandemic, Crawford along with other A-list celebrities gathered outside the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. The Thursday morning was all about celebrities hugging and mingling with each other ahead of Oscar’s weekend. 

The executive producer of “King Richard,” Serena Williams graced the red carpet in a hot pink mini dress. She was accompanied by her baby daughter Olympia Ohanian, who wore a checkered floral dress.

Aunjanue Ellis, who is nominated for best-supporting actress for her role in “King Richard,” wore a red pantsuit with a fitted caped blazer. Will Smith while giving his speech at the award ceremony introduced Ellis to the stage. 

Smith has also received an Oscar nomination for his role as the Williams patriarch. Crawford expressed how excited she is for the Oscars event. She said that they have been waiting for a long time. She is extremely happy because “King Richard” has got six total nominations.

Daniele Lawson, who played the role of Serena and Venus’ older sister is confident about “King Richard” winning. She said that it feels great to see everyone watching and loving this film.

Crawford adds that the whole cast of “King Richard” is rooting for each other. They are extremely happy about the outcome.

On the other hand, Beyoncé is nominated for the theme song “Be Alive,” which she wrote for “King Richard.” She will be performing it at the Oscars this Sunday. 

Lawson and Crawford also spoke about the impact Ellis has had on them. Lawson said that Miss Aunjanue has had a great career. She has done many movies and she deserves the entire acknowledgement for her amazing work. They were all singing praises about Aunjanue.
